  Clearly the "in" place in Shela. Pumping in the evenings, even when other restaurants are quiet or empty. Very extensive menu, and delicious food. Service in the evenings was excellent and fast. Service in the morning was fairly poor and took a while to get a waiter. Smoothie came quickly. The smoothie is warm/room-temp though, so it'd be helpful if they put some ice in it.

  First time visit and immediately one of my favourite hotels in the world. Like an Ett Hem in Kenya. Such a great and unique atmosphere; effortlessly cool, personal, intimate and fun. Responding to a recent review below (very much an outlier) - the food is objectively excellent. We travel around the world a lot to eat, and I can’t think of many other places I would be happy to stay and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner there for several days in a row (any?). It is varied, well executed, good value with lovely service. Regarding the Octopus ragu with gnocchi comment - they are objectively wrong - it was a sensation! Will be back! Morning swim club hopefully still running ;)

  I visited this hotel several times during my visit in shela.The hotel is on the beach front .to get there you need to use a boat from Lamu town or if you are from any other direction. The hotel has a rooftop sitting area that is very spacious and not very crowded atleast .the views from there are quite good and very nice place to sit.The food prices are not so low and not high especially if you are travelling on budget They have variety of cocktails to chose from and the prices are from 1k .I did like the Americano coffee though. You don't really need reservations unless the days when there special event and you will need to pay to get a table The staff are very friendly and welcoming which is a good thing if you are visiting there for the first time. The restaurant is very clean and sitting area is not squeezed.there is a high table on the bar if you desire to be alone .The restaurant is also accessible from the beach and you can get a boat right outside the hotel if you need to close to the other side of manda Island Not ideal as you cannot see the sunset ,you will need to go to the other side to watch the sunset. If you are visiting Lamu I would strongly recommend this place for drinks and food.

  Although we did not stay at Peponi Hotel during our visit to Lamu, we enjoyed a few dinners and sunset drinks at the restaurant and bar. The location on the Shela waterfront is absolutely beautiful and is steps away from the pristine sandy beach Lamu is known for. The outdoor bar and restaurant are furnished nicely and in the evening the glow from the lanterns on the tables notches up the ambiance! The staff are helpful and friendly and well the food is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The word that comes to mind about the menu is imaginative. My only regret is we couldn't stay longer to work my way through more items! If you're in Lamu you don't want to miss eating at the restaurant at Peponi Hotel!

  The warmest of welcome by Guest Services like you can only get in Kenya. Kevin did a great job from months ago on my reservation & requests. We felt like we belonged from the moment we arrived till the farewell. The most comfortable and smoothly operated transfer to the airport was offered. Had the best 90min massage on our veranda by Virginia. The food is outstanding and that is what a lot of people come for. The general appearance of the actual property lacks. On first appearance one honestly gets a feeling of more can be done with regard to plants and neatness of the grounds. The bathroom could do with a ‘freshen up’ especially the shower with the stained small white mosaic tiles. My only EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTMENT was our second night’s unbearable NOICE at 11:30 coming from the restaurant/bar area which caused me to go out in my kikoi to investigate after trying to fall asleep. Hard enough with 11hrs time difference from Canada to have added unbearable noise from non paying guests being rowdy and caring less. It was dealt with immediately but it could have been avoided by management implementing rules if there are any regarding noise from ‘outsiders’ late at night. The next morning an apology was expressed but ‘the damage was done’.
