About

Exhilarating hike with clear skies — best place to hike though weather changes fast at the summit. On a clear day, you see both Mt. Kenya and Mt. Longonot peaks. The bamboo trail might be impassable if it rains.

Amazing hike, dress warmly at the summit and have shoes with good grip.

Trail Overview The hike begins with a one-hour walk to the starting point. From there, you’ll pass through open savannah until reaching the bamboo gate, which marks the entrance to the dense bamboo forest. Bamboo Forest Inside the forest, the trail is boggy and alive with wildlife — if you’re lucky, you may spot the colobus monkey. Be aware that this area is home to many red ant colonies. They often nest right on the trail and in muddy patches, so keep an eye out. On my visits, I had trouble with them crawling into my trousers and biting, so it’s a good idea to wear long, protective clothing and remain cautious. Rocky and Steep Terrain Once you exit the bamboo forest, the trail becomes much steeper and rocky, with shrubs replacing the bamboo. The path follows ridges, so expect a lot of up-and-down hiking across uneven, often challenging ground. Trail Markers and Weather Keep an eye out for the red ribbons that mark the trail — don’t confuse them with the red flowers that grow here. Afternoon rain is common, so plan to hike on muddy trails and bring a waterproof raincoat and trousers. A hiking stick is highly recommended for balance and support.

Awesome experience. On a clear day, you get to see both Mt. Kenya and Mt. Longonot peaks. The Bamboo trail might be almost impassable if it rains. Purpose to have waterproof boots as the weather changes very fast. Plan to start your hiking early, be on the trail by 6am.

Hiking Elephant Hill was an exhilarating experience that tested my endurance and rewarded me with breathtaking views. The trail, located in the Aberdare Ranges, starts off with a scenic walk through bamboo forests, gradually transitioning into steeper terrain as you ascend. The changing landscapes—from dense vegetation to rugged moorlands—kept the hike exciting and visually stunning. The final stretch, known as the “elephant’s back,” was the most challenging but also the most rewarding. Reaching the summit was a triumphant moment, with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills that made every step worth it. The fresh mountain air, coupled with the sense of accomplishment, was truly rejuvenating. This hike demands preparation and resilience, but it’s a must-do for any adventure enthusiast looking to connect with Kenya’s natural beauty and challenge themselves.
