John's cabin at the top of the hill is potentially the most incredible spot in Kenya — the journey up is an adventure, and the view is worth every bump. Bucket shower, amazing service, and a sense you're truly off-grid. Stay longer than one night if you can.

We only stayed 1 night in one of John’s cabins at the top of the hill but wished we had longer! It’s an incredible journey up to the top - John arranged for bodas to drive us up to his lodge where we had dinner and then it was another 30-40 minute walk up to the top. The views from there are very worth it!

John’s cabin at the top of the hill is potentially the most amazing spot in Kenya! We stayed a few nights to scope out and establish a new climbing route on the dike up by the cabin. The cabin has the most incredible views, and John is super friendly and helpful at sorting out logistics. Highly recommend!

A fabulous place! One of the most spectacular locations you can imagine. We stayed in one of Johns two mountain top cabins for three nights and loved every second. John is incredibly helpful and friendly, the cabin is well equipped with all the basics, including solar power and running water (just bring a cool box) and the view is out of this world. I would suggest park in the Marich Pass Field Studies Centre and arrange with John for a land cruiser to come pick you up - the road up to Mtelo is very very steep! (About 1.5hrs from Marich Pass). Hugely recommended! It’s worth noting that John also has the Eco Lodge down in the village, which is also a lovely shady place to stay, just not to be confused with his two tiny, lovely cabins perched up on the mountain.

Great discovery with a wide and flat grassy campsite with great view which also has a covered shelter with seating if needed. cold water shower (but access to a banda available should hot water be preferred) and clean sit down toilets. 1000ksh per camper. there are bandas available for 3,000ksh per night. we prefered outdoor camping. guided hikes to nearby view points available. John and his family are gracious hosts. meals can be had at the family restaurant for 800ksh for dinner. Turn off from A1 (Kitale - Lodwar) main road has a sign board. Very steep, cliff hugging climb to high ridge tops then rough road to Mbara village. Best done by 4x4 or high clearance vehicle.

This is by far the most amazing stay in Kenia! The place is beautiful and the view is absolutely stunning. The hosts are so welcoming and they serve delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a perfect place for when you want to climb mount Mtelo and get to know the local culture.
