  Warm. Historical. Clean. Not too busy nor loud. One would fail to know if there was an event here given Lamu's narrow streets and high buildings. In fact, on our last day, we rode a donkey into the square to find celebrations for Mashujaa Day (Heroes Day) ongoing, with young boys and girls dancing, singing taarab, and reciting poetry. The square has plenty of seating areas, but the most popular is under a mkungu tree that has been there since the building of the Lamu Fort more than two centuries ago! I particularly liked the sugarcane juice stand located at the right end of the square if one is facing the fort. The square also acts as a central point to get directions or create a mental model of Lamu.
