A Masai Mara safari can cost anything from about USD 200 a day on a shared minibus with a tent outside the gate to more than USD 3,000 a day at the newest lodges. The spread comes from four decisions: the season (the non-resident reserve fee doubles from USD 100 to USD 200 per day on 1 July), whether you sleep inside the reserve, in a private conservancy or outside the gates, how you get there (a private Land Cruiser from Nairobi versus a Wilson–Mara flight at USD 180–327 each way), and how much of the extras list you say yes to. This guide prices each of those choices from 2026 rate sheets and operator quotes, then adds them up into budget, mid-range and luxury daily totals so you can see where your money goes.

Money Tips
Travel January–June: the non-resident reserve fee is USD 100 instead of USD 200 and most camps are 30–45 % cheaper than July–October.
A 3-day/2-night trip only needs two days of reserve fees if you enter after 6 am on day 1 and leave by 10 am on day 3 — plan game drives around the 06:00–18:00 ticket window.
Pay the reserve fee in USD by card or cash; gates convert KES at a poor rate, and the Mara Triangle gates take no cash at all.
Operators advise generating your KAPS prepayment slip (aps.co.ke, not eCitizen) before you leave Nairobi and screenshotting the QR code; Talek and Musiara gates have unreliable network, and this is best practice rather than a published county rule.
Staying in a conservancy swaps the USD 200 reserve fee for a USD 130 conservancy fee and adds night drives and walks — cheaper in high season if you never enter the reserve.
Fill a shared Land Cruiser: a USD 250/day vehicle is USD 125 pp for two but USD 42 pp for six.
Ask what the package excludes — vehicle gate fee, village visit (USD 20–40), balloon (USD 430–650), late-departure lunch (USD 100) and tips add USD 50–150 per day.
