About This Experience

This private 9-hours hiking trip to Mt Longonot National Park, located around 45 miles (73 km) from Nairobi city on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, has the best sightseeing opportunities and one can look inside the mountain crater. The Mount Longonot national park is a popular park for hiking and mountain climbing that takes less than 3-4 hours to climb up and down. There is a lot of wildlife to see as you hike and the eye catching view of the rift valley escarpments.

Detailed Description

Mount Longonot is the kind of volcano that demands respect and rewards the effort in equal measure. Sitting on the floor of the Great Rift Valley about 73 kilometres from Nairobi, it rises sharply from the flat valley floor to a crater rim that takes three to four hours to summit — and the views from the top are unlike anything you'll find on a flat game drive. Perfect Wilderness Tours and Safaris runs this as a private, full-day trip with hotel pick-up and drop-off within Nairobi CBD. The day starts early with the drive out of the city, dropping down the Escarpment into the Rift Valley — your guide will stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint on the way, where the scale of the geological feature becomes immediately clear: a crack in the earth that runs from the Red Sea to Tanzania, formed five million years ago. It's an easy stop to rush past, but worth taking a few minutes to absorb. At Longonot National Park, the hike begins at the base of the volcano. The trail climbs through gullies and loose rock up to the crater rim, where you can look down into the forested interior of the crater itself — it's genuinely dramatic. Wildlife is present throughout: buffalo, zebra, and various antelope species use the park, and your guide will keep you informed about what's around and where to look. The rim circuit adds extra distance for those who want to walk the full perimeter. The hike is rated moderate — not beginner-level, but accessible to anyone who walks regularly and doesn't mind a sustained climb. The trip optionally includes a boat ride on Lake Naivasha (an additional cost), where you can spot hippos and hundreds of bird species including the African fish eagle. If you're combining Longonot with the lake, it makes for a very full day, but an exceptionally varied one. At KES 21,797 per person for an 11-hour private day, inclusions cover hotel pickup, an English-speaking guide, and park entrance fees. Lunch is available to purchase locally. Wear proper hiking footwear, bring sunscreen and at least two litres of water, and pace yourself on the ascent — the altitude adds to the effort more than most people expect. This experience is best suited to travellers who want more than a game drive and are comfortable with a real physical challenge. The 4.87-star rating from 62 reviewers tells you how consistently it delivers.

The rift valley system was formed 5 million years ago and the rift runs from the red sea through Ethiopia and Kenya and Tanzania. The rift valley is an active volcanic area and has some of the most interesting features including more than 8 lakes, dormant and active volcanic mountains and hotsprings and geysers  You can actually see the volcanic Mt Suswa from this high place with their evergreen craters and the undulating green rift valley floor.
