About This Experience

Ol Pejeta is home to three of the world’s last remaining three northern white rhinos, and a sanctuary for 105 critically endangered black rhinos. The Conservancy employ highly trained rhino protection squads, partner with international veterinary experts and ensure data is gathered regularly on each individual animal. on top of that you will be visiting a blind rhino called Baraka and also Kenya's only remaining chimpanzee in the chimpanzee enclosure.

Detailed Description

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is doing something the rest of the world is struggling to manage — keeping the northern white rhino alive. With only three individuals remaining on Earth, all of them at Ol Pejeta under 24-hour armed protection, a day visit to the conservancy from Nairobi at KES 49,020 is as much a witness to a pivotal conservation moment as it is a safari, and Perfect Wilderness Tours and Safaris manages the logistics of a long but worthwhile journey. Private transfers leave Nairobi in the early morning for the roughly 3-hour drive north through the central highlands. The approach to Ol Pejeta takes you past the slopes of Mount Kenya and across the Laikipia plateau, where the landscape opens into the wide, dry grasslands that characterise this part of Kenya. The conservancy sits at around 1,800 metres and the air is noticeably cooler and cleaner than Nairobi. The 24-hour itinerary gives you a full day inside the conservancy's boundaries before the return drive. The game drive circuits cover terrain shared by all of the Big Five, including a black rhino population of 105 individuals — the largest concentration in East Africa. At least six lion prides inhabit the conservancy permanently, alongside healthy numbers of leopards, cheetahs, and a substantial elephant population. Giraffe, zebra, eland, and the full range of plains game populate the open areas. But it's Baraka who tends to stay with visitors long after the day is over — a blind black rhino who lives in a dedicated enclosure and can be approached on foot. The keeper relationship with Baraka, who responds to sound and touch after years of daily contact, transforms what could be a simple welfare viewing into a genuine encounter with an individual animal's character and trust. The chimpanzee sanctuary is Kenya's only one — a population of rescued East African chimpanzees in a large island enclosure, a genuinely unusual component of any Kenyan wildlife experience that adds a primate dimension found nowhere else in the country's safari circuit. Exclusive northern white rhino viewing is available at USD 70 per person as an optional addition, placing you within metres of the last three individuals on Earth under maximum conservation security — a moment that most visitors describe as quietly affecting in a way they didn't anticipate. A five-course buffet lunch at Sweetwaters Serena Lodge is available at a discounted rate of USD 25 per person, additional. The lodge terrace overlooks a waterhole that attracts animals throughout the afternoon. Bring binoculars, a zoom lens, layered clothing for the cooler highland morning, and sun protection for the open vehicle circuits. This is a long day that rewards people who want both wildlife and the larger conservation story behind it.
