About This Experience

This is a safe walking tour. Ideal for people on a layover. We treat you to a safe fruit salad. We might engage you in cooking Chapati or ugali which are very popular foods in Kenya. We sit in one of the local restaurants to have a feel of the food experience in Nairobi. We pay for your shoes to be cleaned at shoe cleaning kiosk and we treat you to a street photo shoot. All optional. While you can stroll around Nairobi by yourself, you cant compare this to the wealth of information you would get from our guide(s). The sense of security and ease of getting around wouldn't also compare. We also teach you some everyday cool Nairobi slang and basic Swahili words and sentences. We basically teach you how to blend into the culturally diverse city.

Detailed Description

Happy Tribe Travel runs the kind of walking tour that might teach you some Nairobi slang and offer to get your shoes shined at a roadside kiosk between stops. It's deliberately low-key, and at KES 2,580 for 2.5 hours it's one of the most accessible entry points into the city for any traveler — layover guests included. You meet at CJs restaurant, where the outside green seats are your waiting spot. The guide picks up the group and starts with Jeevanjee Gardens — the colonial-era garden that's now a functioning public park in the heart of the CBD — before moving to the City Market, where four separate trading sections cover everything from crafts to fresh produce to meat. You'll see the Jamia Mosque facade, learn the history of the McMillan Memorial Library (one of the city's oldest reading rooms, now constitutionally protected), walk down Moi Avenue past the Askari Monument and the African war veterans memorial obelisk, and reach the Norfolk Hotel — Nairobi's oldest, a building whose guest book reads like a who's-who of early 20th-century East Africa. The Dedan Kimathi statue on Kimathi Street gets a proper stop: the Mau Mau field marshal executed by the British in 1957 stands now in bronze near the Hilton, and your guide gives the independence movement its full context. The matatu culture observation point — where Nairobi's wildly decorated minibuses pile passengers and noise into the bus stages — gives you a street-level pulse of how the city actually moves people. The KICC rooftop follows for the aerial view: Parliament buildings, Uhuru Park, the railway, the Holy Family Basilica, all laid out below you. Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip — some stretches involve uneven pavement and market floors. A small daypack for water and a camera keeps your hands free. If you have dietary restrictions, mention them when booking — most guides can adjust food stops to accommodate vegetarian, halal, or allergy needs without missing any of the cultural highlights. The fruit salad served during the tour is a genuine touch. The optional chapati cooking session and street photo shoot add levity without being gimmicky. The guide teaches enough Swahili phrases and Nairobi slang that you'll feel marginally less like a tourist by the time you're done. For a layover, a morning before a longer trip, or simply a gentle way in to a city that can feel intimidating, this works well. Rated 4.7 across 46 reviews.
