Detailed Description

The two anchors of this half-day tour — the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre — are among the most emotionally engaged wildlife experiences available in any city in the world. Rustic Nature Tours, rated 4.9 across 168 reviews, adds a third dimension with a visit to a women's bead-making cooperative that rounds the day into something genuinely complete. Your accredited guide meets you at your accommodation and takes you directly to the elephant orphanage, timing the arrival for the public viewing window between 11am and noon. The Sheldrick Trust's nursery is where the rehabilitation process begins for orphaned elephants from across Kenya: calves that have lost their mothers to drought, poaching, or human-wildlife conflict. You'll watch keepers manage individual feeding schedules, see animals that arrived weeks ago alongside others ready to begin their gradual return to wild herds. The guides are unusually forthcoming here — they'll walk you through the research, the reintegration process, and the long-term tracking that follows each animal into the wild. You can also choose to sponsor or adopt one of the orphans during the visit, an option many visitors find worth taking. The Giraffe Centre comes next. Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya, it focuses on the Rothschild giraffe, a subspecies whose remaining wild population is critically small. The centre's elevated feeding platform puts you at eye level with animals that can reach five and a half metres, and the educational session before feeding explains breeding programmes and habitat loss in a way that sticks. The centre admits Kenyan school groups regularly, and the conservation mission is genuinely primary here — the tourist experience is built around it, not the other way around. Charge your camera batteries the night before each game drive. The golden hour light just after dawn and before sunset produces the best wildlife photographs, and you don't want to miss it. Keep an eye on the sky as well as the ground. Martial eagles, bateleurs, and secretary birds are common overhead, and vulture circles often signal a recent kill worth investigating. The optional stop at the Kobe Beads Centre adds a human-interest layer to the morning. The bead-making operation employs women from the local community and exports internationally; watching the pottery-to-jewellery process is a pleasant half hour. Entry fees to both the orphanage and giraffe centre are included in the KES 12,255 price. Food and tips are your own expense. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before the tour begins.
