About This Experience

This is a private day tour to Tsavo East National park. Tsavo East National park is home to many large herds of elephants, lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes and many more. It's considered as the largest park in Kenya and it has four gates. You will visit the Aruba dam and see many animals drinking water. It's a park not to miss when in Kenya.

Detailed Description

Tsavo East is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the biggest in Africa — 13,747 square kilometres of semi-arid savannah, riverine palm forest, and red-dust plains — and Perfect Safaris' private full-day trip from Mombasa, priced at KES 39,990 with entrance fees, lunch, and guide included, is the most practical way to cover serious ground there in a single day. You're in the vehicle at 5:30am, which sounds unkind until you reach Bachuma Gate as the sun is still low and orange, the light exactly right for the characteristic Tsavo landscape: red laterite soil, scattered doum palms, the massive termite mounds that punctuate the open ground. The red elephants of Tsavo are not a different species — they roll in the iron-rich soil until their grey skin turns a brick-red that makes them look unlike any elephant you've seen in other parks. Tsavo East's herds are large, sometimes enormous, and you'll likely encounter your first group within an hour of entering. The 'Man-eaters of Tsavo' are lionesses and lions descended from the same gene pool as the two males that killed 135 construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1898 — though the current population is notably less focused on railway workers. Your guide knows the territories and den sites well enough to give you a realistic chance of finding them. Buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, and the full complement of East African antelope species are resident; the park is large enough to absorb the visitors without feeling crowded. Aruba Dam, built in the 1950s across the Voi River, is the park's key water point. In the dry season (January–March and June–August) this is where the wildlife concentrates — elephant herds of 50 or more, waterbuck, zebra, and Maasai giraffe all coming to the same water at the same time, with crocodiles lying along the banks. The lunchtime stop at one of the park lodges gives you a proper meal and air conditioning before the afternoon drive back toward the exit. The vehicle choice matters on this trip: the customised safari van or 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof that Perfect Safaris uses allows you to stand and shoot in any direction, which is the correct setup for wildlife photography in open savannah. Photographers should bring a telephoto lens (400mm or longer), dust protection for their gear, and more memory cards than they think they need. The park itself is best in the dry season when animals concentrate at water. The drive back to Mombasa deposits you at your hotel in the early evening.
