About This Experience

Enjoy this 11.5-hour tour of Lake Nakuru National Park, home to one of the most remarkable wild bird populations in all of Africa. Get up close with wildlife on a game viewing drive, and be on the lookout for the park’s amazing flamingos. Enjoy a 1-hour boat ride on Lake Naivasha as well before being transported back to your Nairobi hotel.

Detailed Description

Lake Nakuru is one of East Africa's great bird spectacles, and this 11-hour private tour from Perfect Safaris gets you there and back from Nairobi in a single long day — with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha thrown in on the way home — for KES 27,207. The early start matters here: your guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel at 6am, and the three-hour drive northwest via the Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint puts you at Nakuru's gate by 9am, ahead of the midday heat and before the park fills with other vehicles. The Great Rift Valley lookout on the descent is worth the stop — you're looking down from an altitude of roughly 2,400 metres at a flat, haze-soft valley floor stretching for 60 kilometres, with the lake glinting silver-pink in the distance. It's a scale of landscape that doesn't fully make sense until you're standing at its edge. Lake Nakuru National Park sits within an extinct caldera and the lake itself is alkaline — a chemistry that supports the blue-green algae that flamingos feed on. In good years, the shoreline turns pink. In all years, the birdlife is remarkable: over 400 species have been recorded here, and even a moderate morning will yield flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, and a sequence of raptors riding the thermals off the escarpment. The 3-hour game drive with your guide covers the lakeshore circuit and the forest tracks on the park's western rim, where you have a realistic chance of encountering Nakuru's famous white rhino — the park holds one of Kenya's strongest populations. Black rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, and Rothschild giraffe round out the big game. Lunch is at Lake Nakuru Lodge, a mid-range property with views of the park, and it's a good opportunity to debrief with your guide on what you've seen. The afternoon drive out of the park heads south to Lake Naivasha for a one-hour boat ride before the return to Nairobi. After a full morning of game driving, the boat ride feels like a gear change — slower, quieter, water birds close overhead, hippos surfacing without urgency a few boat-lengths away. You're back in Nairobi around 6pm. Note that park entrance fees (USD 60 per person) are paid separately at the gate by Visa card — cash is not accepted, so come prepared. This is a long day best suited to wildlife enthusiasts, serious photographers, and anyone who wants a full Kenyan wildlife experience without overnight travel. Wear layers (the escarpment is cold at 6am), bring a hat, binoculars if you own them, and good sunscreen.
