The Tsavo parks are the largest protected area in Kenya — together they span roughly 21,000 square kilometres of red-earthed savannah, lava flows, and riverine forest. Tsavo West is the more dramatic of the two visually, with the volcanic Ngulia Mountains rising from the plains and the Mzima Springs producing crystal-clear water from underground channels fed by Kilimanjaro's snowpack. This is big-game country: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and the Tsavo red elephants — named for the iron-rich dust they habitually coat themselves with — all move through in healthy numbers. Lions and cheetahs are regularly spotted on the open plains alongside the more numerous zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe.
