Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world where you can photograph a lion with a city skyline behind it. Just 117 square kilometres, it's 20 minutes from the CBD. Four of the Big Five are present (no elephants). The open southern boundary lets wildlife migrate to and from the Athi-Kitengela plains.
The surreal experience of seeing rhinos grazing as planes descend into JKIA overhead is real, not staged. This is the backyard safari that shouldn't work — but does.
Entry Fees (October 2025 Revision)
The Kenya Wildlife Service revised park fees in October 2025. Here's what you pay:
Entry fees per person:
- East African citizens: KES 1,000 (adult), KES 500 (child 3-17)
- Kenya residents: KES 1,350 (adult), KES 675 (child)

Vehicle fees: KES 600/day for cars under 6 seats. KES 1,500/day for vehicles with 6-12 seats.
| Visitor Category | Adult | Child (3–17) |

| Kenya resident | KES 1,350 | KES 675 |
| African citizen (non-EAC) | USD 40 | USD 20 |
| Non-resident | USD 80 | USD 40 |
| Vehicle (under 6 seats) | KES 600/day | — |
| Vehicle (6–12 seats) | KES 1,500/day | — |
Payment is via eCitizen online (M-Pesa, Visa, Mastercard) or card at the gate. Cash is not accepted. Pre-pay on the eCitizen portal before you arrive to avoid gate delays.
Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
Gates open 6am-6pm daily. Your entry ticket is valid for 24 hours.
The single best time to visit is right at gate opening (6am). Animals are most active in early morning before heat drives them into shade. "I went at 7:30 in the morning and we managed to see even the lions," one Reddit user reports. By late morning, many animals hide.
Weekday mornings are least crowded. Avoid Sunday afternoons — Nairobi families flock here on weekends.
How to Get There
The Main Gate (Langata Road) is the most popular entry, 15-20 minutes from Nairobi CBD. Mbagathi Gate (Magadi Road) is used for Sheldrick Wildlife Trust access. East Gate near the SGR terminus is convenient for airport layover safaris.
Uber to the Main Gate costs KES 500-900 from the CBD. If you're driving yourself, parking at the gate is secure and straightforward.
| Transport Option | Cost | Travel Time from CBD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber / taxi to Main Gate | KES 500–900 | 15–20 min | Self-drive once inside |
| Guided safari (incl. transport) | KES 8,000–15,000/person | Pickup from hotel | Guide + vehicle included |
| Self-drive (own car) | Park fee only | 15–20 min | Regular car OK on main circuits |
| SGR + taxi (from airport) | KES 100 train + KES 300–500 taxi | 30–40 min total | East Gate nearest to JKIA |
What the Experience Is Like
You can self-drive or hire a guide at the gate. Self-drive works — main tracks are decent, and a regular car handles dry-season circuits. But you'll miss wildlife without trained eyes. One local advises: "Like playing hide and seek with the game. Follow tour vans — they often spot the lions and you can follow them."
Guided half-day safaris cost KES 8,000-15,000 per person including transport. Tour guides radio each other about animal locations, dramatically increasing sightings. For first-timers wanting to maximize encounters, a guide is strongly recommended.
| Activity | Cost | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided half-day safari (incl. transport) | KES 8,000–15,000/person | 3–5 hours | Guide radios for animal locations |
| Self-drive game drive | Park entry fee only | 3–5 hours | Regular car OK on main circuits |
| Ivory Burning Site memorial stop | Included in park entry | 20 min | Kenya burned 12 tonnes of ivory here in 1989 |
| Guide tip | KES 500–1,000/day | — | Standard for good service |
The "planes over giraffes" shot is genuine. The park's southern boundary runs near JKIA approach paths. On clear days, you'll photograph wildlife with planes overhead — most common along the park's eastern reaches.
What You'll Actually See
Rhinos: Almost guaranteed. Multiple visitors report seeing 15-20 in a single drive. The park is one of Kenya's most successful rhino sanctuaries.
Lions: Present but less predictable. "Found three lions hiding in the bushes" is a common report, but you'll need luck or a good guide.
Buffalo, giraffes, zebras: Very common, especially near the entrance.
Leopards and cheetahs: Rare but present.
NO elephants: This is the one Big Five member absent from the park. It's too small for resident elephant herds.
400+ bird species: Excellent for birders.
The western side has the best roads and most wildlife in dry season. East of the SGR railway line, roads get rougher and you'll want a 4x4.
How Long to Spend
A proper game drive takes 3-5 hours. Some visitors do a shorter 2-hour loop, but experienced safari-goers recommend at least half a day to cover the main circuits. Most visitors do a morning game drive and are done by lunch.
Practical Tips
Bring binoculars. Sunscreen. Water. There are limited facilities inside the park.
Download offline maps before you enter (Google Maps works decently). Signage is limited. A Honda Fit will handle main roads in dry season; a 4x4 opens up more side tracks.
Don't exit your vehicle except at designated spots. The Ivory Burning Site memorial (where Kenya burned 12 tonnes of ivory in 1989) is worth a stop.
Pay park fees on eCitizen before arriving to avoid delays. The portal can crash or be slow — don't rely on gate Wi-Fi.
Who Should Visit / Who Should Skip
Visit if: You have a free morning in Nairobi, you want a safari preview before heading to the Mara, or you're on a tight schedule. The park delivers reliable rhino sightings that can be harder to get at Mara or Amboseli. The city-skyline-over-savanna photos are unique.
Skip if: You're heading to Masai Mara anyway and prefer saving the entry fee for a bigger park. For visitors with limited time and budget, the Mara will deliver more spectacularly.
For Nairobi residents, it's a remarkable backyard. For tourists, it's an excellent warm-up or a standout half-day experience.
Worth Doing If You're Also Going to Masai Mara?
Yes, particularly for the rhinos. One expert reviewer: "Nairobi NP deserves recognition as an incredible wilderness region... almost too many rhinos for the area." If your only goal is a traditional safari experience, the Mara will be more spectacular. But if you're doing both, Nairobi National Park offers something the Mara doesn't: the surreal juxtaposition of wild Africa and urban skyline.
Nearby Attractions
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (adjacent) is the world's most successful elephant orphanage. Public visit is 11am-12pm daily. Combine the two for a full morning of wildlife encounters.
Giraffe Centre (15 minutes, Langata) lets you hand-feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes. Karen Blixen Museum (15 minutes, Karen) preserves the author's farmhouse from Out of Africa. Bomas of Kenya (5 minutes) showcases traditional dances and homesteads. Ole Sereni hotel sits right on the park boundary — its rooftop bar offers wildlife views with sundowners.
The classic "Wildlife Day" itinerary: Nairobi National Park at 6am, Sheldrick at 11am, lunch, Giraffe Centre in the afternoon.
Common Complaints
The eCitizen payment system can crash or be slow. The SGR railway line cutting through the park is an eyesore. Self-drivers often report disappointing sightings without guide knowledge. Traffic getting to and from the park can be brutal during Nairobi rush hours.
But the park works. It's 117 square kilometres of wilderness where you can see lions, rhinos, and giraffes — with Nairobi's skyline in the frame. Twenty minutes from the CBD. It shouldn't work, but it does.
