Iten is officially the "Home of Champions," sitting at 2,394 meters on the edge of the Kerio Valley escarpment in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The town has produced a disproportionate number of Olympic champions and world record holders — more per square kilometer than anywhere else on Earth.
Running tourism is now well-established here. You don't need to be elite to experience it. You just need to be willing to wake up at dawn, run at altitude, and accept that local teenagers will make your personal best look pedestrian.
What Makes Iten Special
The altitude is the obvious answer. At 2,394 meters, your body works harder to deliver oxygen to your muscles. Over weeks, you adapt. Your red blood cell count increases. When you return to sea level, you're faster.
But altitude alone doesn't explain Iten. Colorado has altitude. Ethiopia has altitude. Iten has something else.
The red-soil trails are gentle on joints. The running culture is deeply embedded — you'll see groups training at dawn on every road. The town breathes running. It's in the DNA.
Key sites include Kamariny Stadium, the historic training ground where generations of champions have logged interval sessions. St. Patrick's High School is where Brother Colm O'Connell, an Irish missionary teacher, started Kenya's distance running revolution in 1961. He's still coaching.
The combination of altitude, soft trails, and a culture that treats running as normal produces an environment unlike anywhere else on the planet.
Training Camps for Visitors
Several camps accept visitors year-round. You don't need to qualify. You need to pay and show up ready to work.
| Camp | Features | Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Swiss Side Iten | Accommodation, gym, cryotherapy, sauna, massages, bike rental, personal pacers, restaurant with Kerio Valley views | Varies, inquire directly |
| Lornah Kiplagat HATC | Founded by 4x World Champion. Track, pool, sauna, gym, sports massage, physiotherapy | ~$100-200/day all-inclusive |
| Kenya Camp | Premier experience, expert coaching, personal Kenyan pacers, structured programs | ~$100-180/day |
| Trainingcamps Kenya | Year-round, World Athletics certified coaches, group environment | Various dates |
The Swiss Side Iten is the most comprehensive. Full recovery facilities, restaurant with Kerio Valley views, and the option to hire personal pacers who will run at your target pace for as long as you can hold it.
Lornah Kiplagat's High Altitude Training Centre (HATC) is run by a 4x World Cross Country Champion. It's more institutional than boutique, but the facilities are excellent and the coaching is world-class.
Kenya Camp offers the most tailored experience. Expert coaching, personal Kenyan pacers, and structured training programs designed around your goals.
Most camps welcome all ability levels. You don't need to be fast. You need to be willing to suffer a little and laugh at yourself when you can't keep up with the 14-year-olds.
Kipchoge's Kaptagat
Eliud Kipchoge doesn't train in Iten. He trains at the Global Sports Communication facility in Kaptagat, about 24 km east of Eldoret.
Kaptagat sits at roughly 2,380 meters — slightly lower than Iten but still high enough for serious altitude adaptation. It's less congested, quieter, and more private.
The camp is closed to casual tourism. You can't just show up and ask for a selfie. But staying at nearby training centers in Kaptagat puts you in the same high-altitude running environment where the world's greatest marathoner does his work.
Several Kaptagat-area camps accept visitors. The appeal is being in the same ecosystem — same altitude, same trails, same thin air — without the crowds that now flock to Iten proper.
The Kerio Valley Viewpoint
Iten sits on the rim of the Kerio Valley. The viewpoint offers one of Kenya's most spectacular panoramas.
The escarpment drops hundreds of meters to the valley floor. On clear mornings, you can see across the entire valley to the far escarpment. It's part of the Great Rift Valley, the geological scar that runs from Lebanon to Mozambique.
The viewpoint is visible from multiple points around town and along the main road. Many training camps — including Swiss Side Iten — are positioned to take advantage of the view.
It's worth pausing mid-run to look. Not just because it's beautiful, but because it reminds you why you came here. This is where champions are made.
Running Events
Iten hosts several annual running events that draw both elite athletes and recreational runners.
| Event | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Iten Mountain Trail Run (25K) | March (3rd edition March 7, 2026) | 25.4 km, 1,071m elevation gain. Prize: KES 1,000,000 |
| Iten International Marathon | December | Held on Iten roads |
| Safari Race Series — Rift Valley | Annual | Gravel cycling across Kerio Valley |
| Eldoret City Marathon | April | Nearby Eldoret |
The Iten Mountain Trail Run is the most challenging. 25.4 kilometers with over 1,000 meters of climbing at altitude. The prize purse is substantial (KES 1,000,000), so the front of the race is fast. The back of the race is recreational runners who want bragging rights.
The Iten International Marathon in December is more accessible. It's run on roads, not trails, and the course is less technical. Still at altitude. Still hard.
The Safari Race Series is for gravel cyclists, not runners, but it crosses the Kerio Valley and offers a different perspective on the landscape.
Eldoret City Marathon in April is nearby and draws a large field. It's a good option if Iten's events don't align with your travel dates.
Getting There & Where to Stay
From Nairobi, Iten is a 5-6 hour drive via Nakuru and Eldoret. The road is paved and well-maintained. See our Self-Drive Road Trip guide for route details.
Alternatively, fly to Eldoret (45 minutes from Nairobi) and drive 30-40 minutes to Iten. The road from Eldoret to Iten climbs steadily to 2,400 meters with spectacular Kerio Valley views along the way.
For accommodation, most visitors stay at training camps. Swiss Side, HATC, and Kenya Camp all include lodging in their all-inclusive packages.
Budget guesthouses exist in Iten town for independent travelers. Eldoret, about 35 km away, has a wider range of hotels if you prefer a larger town with more amenities.
What Recreational Runners Should Know
Allow 3-5 days for altitude acclimatization. You will feel the elevation. Your easy pace will be slower. Your threshold pace will feel impossible. This is normal.
Start slow — much slower than your sea-level pace. The first few days, focus on time on feet rather than pace. Your body is adapting. Let it.
Morning runs start at dawn (6-6:30 AM). The day heats up quickly. By 10 AM, you'll want to be done.
Bring your own running shoes. Limited options to buy in Iten, and you don't want to break in new shoes at altitude.
The red-dirt trails are soft and forgiving. Road running is also popular. Most camps offer both options.
Kenyan runners will lap you. Multiple times. It's humbling and inspiring in equal measure. Don't take it personally. They've been training at altitude since they were kids. You're a sea-level tourist. Embrace the gap. Learn from it. See our Kenya Quick Facts for more cultural context.
The experience is worth the humility. You'll run on the same trails as Olympic champions. You'll wake up to Kerio Valley views. You'll push your body harder than you thought possible. And when you return home, you'll be faster.
That's the promise of Iten. Not that you'll become a champion. But that you'll understand what it takes to become one.
